How Do You Become a Notary?

To become a notary, you’ll need to follow six steps. It may seem like a lot, but it’s really not too complicated. You just need to follow the directions and meet all the requirements.

Prerequisites

Before you start the application process, make sure you meet the following prerequisites:

  • You legally reside in Florida.
  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • You can understand English.
  • You cannot be convicted of a felony (unless you have had your rights restored).

Complete the Application

How do you become a notary? Start with the application. The application is available online through a bonding agency such as the Florida Notary Association. Make sure to fill out the application completely; do not leave anything blank. Write NONE if something does not apply to you. Make sure to include a character reference, which is someone who has known you for at least a year and can attest to your character (no family members). When you are done, submit the application along with the applicable fees.

Get Training

Another step in how to become a notary is to know what you’re doing. That means you need proper training through an online training course. It’s free and takes a minimum of three hours. You can, however, take the course in multiple sessions.

Get a Surety Bond

Before you work as a notary, you will need a $7,500 surety bond. This contract between you and the state of Florida guarantees that you will follow all notary laws while serving in Florida.

Get Approved

If your application is approved, you will receive a notary seal and commission certificate. You will need these for the next steps.

Get a Stamp

By law, you will need a rubber stamp so you can perform notary duties. The stamp must include your name and commission number and contain the words “Notary Public—State of Florida.”
